Kodak invented the digital camera in 1975 but dropped it for fear it would threaten its film business. If they hadn’t have done so, they could have dominated the industry and still have a thriving business. Kodak once said, “We don’t sell film, we sell memories.” The company who made “the Kodak Moment” part of American culture forgot who they were.
Let’s face it—some people are just bullies. Maybe it’s because none of the other kids on the playground were big enough to stand up to them. Or perhaps their mom and dad took Dr. Spock’s permissive parenting advice to heart. Some people never really grow up. Instead, they learn just enough manners to get by in life … until they can’t get what they want, and resort to grade-school style bullying.
It’s easier to be choosy once you have an established clientèle. But when you’re new and desperate for business, the temptation to take on any client with a pulse is difficult to resist. Once you find yourself in an abusive client relationship, however, you have but one option:fire the client.
I must admit, of all social media, Twitter is the one I “get” the least. Don’t believe me? Check out my whopping 59 Twitter followers. (Oops, make that 60!) So if you want talk about RTs and #hashtags, this won’t be the read for you.

Whenever I’m asked about Twitter, it’s usually from people with the pre-conceived notion that everyone there is a self-absorbed narcissist tweeting about what they ate for breakfast. And while Twitter does attract more than its share of self-centeredness, it’s also much, much more.
Twitter often defies explanation, but my niece has one of the best I’ve heard:
Walking to the corner market with my best friend to buy a packet of that little pink bubble gum wrapped in a comic strip was one of the highlights of my nine-year-old existence. Sure, there were other bubble gum brands on the shelf, but none of them had the latest adventures of Bazooka Joe inside. I was too young and blissfully ignorant to realize that my purchase decision was being influenced by a well-used, little-known marketing strategy, called Content Marketing.
I have a confession to make. I don’t own a smartphone. There, I said it.
That may come as a surprise, especially from a self-professed web marketing geek like myself. It’s not that I don’t want one, it’s that I don’t really need one; I have all the computers I need in the places I need them most—at home and at work. And I don’t really feel the urgency to get online in the supermarket or at the doctor’s office. Sure, letting all my Facebook friends know I’ve been stuck in the waiting room for the past 20 minutes would be vindicating; but that’s a luxury an expensive data plan can’t justify.
Meanwhile, a debate is raging online over whether the iPad should be considered a computer or not.

Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two—and only two—basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs.
Let’s talk about each of those.
